Waste to Art
The healthcare sector is one of the largest contributors to waste in the United States, generating more than five million tons annually. Approximately 85% of this material is classified as noninfectious, yet much of it is sent to landfills rather than recovered, recycled, or reused. In response to this environmental challenge, UCSF and UCSF Health launched a creative initiative inviting participants to transform discarded medical and everyday materials into works of art. Selected artworks have been exhibited across campus and medical center locations, bringing greater visibility to the possibilities of creative reuse. The initiative seeks to engage the diverse UCSF community in conversations about environmental responsibility while encouraging participants to reconsider patterns of consumption and disposal in healthcare settings. By connecting artistic experimentation with sustainable practices, the project invites new perspectives on waste reduction, resource recovery, and the transition toward a more environmentally responsible future.
