Description

A wallpaper pattern built from a sample of seaweeds and kelp gathered over 100 years and held in the Algae Collection at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Marine algae oxygenate the ocean, create habitat for other organisms, and anchor a vast marine food web; repeated across a wall, a century of collected specimens becomes an immersive record of coastal life and of the scientific care that preserved it. Digital print on archival paper, made in 2022 through The Algae Society Bio Art & Design Lab, with support from Anya Chytrowski, the UCSC Arts Research Institute, and the OpenLab Collaborative Research Center. The wallpaper was shown in CONFLUENCE: Experimentation | Installation | Collaboration at the Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington, North Carolina (January 28 – April 24, 2022) and Seymour Discovery Center at UC Santa Cruz (April – October 2026).
